Just because your homebrew is done with the grain, doesn’t mean there isn’t still a lot of nutritional value left. Thanks to the Spent Grain Chef, we can now bring you the steps to turning your spent grain into flour, and from there the possibilities are endless. All you need is an oven, and time. And if you’ve got time to homebrew, you’ve got time to make spent grain flour.
7 steps to homemade spent grain flour
- Set you oven to the lowest setting possible, about 170-200 degrees Fahrenheit
- Take your spent grain and spread it thinly on a clean, ungreased baking sheet
- Place in oven and let the grains dry for approximately 7 hours
- After 4 hours, pull out your sheet and toss the spent grain, making sure they all dry evenly
- Place the barley back in the oven for another 3 hours (drying time may vary)
- Use a coffee or spice grinder to turn your spent grain into fine flour
- Store in an airtight container, until you are ready to make some treats
