If you don’t know you wines, how will you ever become an expert vintner. Making great wine takes time, patience and research. Going to wine tastings is a great way to expand your knowledge, but before you head out for some inspiration, here’s a quick overview of the most popular types of wine and what they are famous for. Pinot Grigio

Perhaps one of the world most famous wines. You may have also heard it called by its French name Pinot Gris or in German: Ruländer. Whatever you call it, this wine is a soft and perfumed white wine with hints of honey and spice.

Sauvignon Blanc

This is the third most planted grape in California. This dry white is found all over the world and typically comes out during the warm weather months. Most notable about this wine is the notes of citrus, pineapple and kiwi.

Pinot Noir

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, you may notice Pinot Noir getting more attention. The Pinot Noir flavors range from dark fruits to peppery spices making it the perfect holiday dinner wine.


It is the number one white wine grape in America and has had huge success in Burgundy, France. It is world famous and a great fallback wine for any occasion. It’s flavors range from tangy tropical fruit to vanilla, all depending on where it was produced.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Sometimes referred to as “the King of the red grape”, this bold red wine is most famous for the dominant black current, licorice and cedar flavors that linger in your mouth.
